A Hose Wrap/Unwrap System is a critical part of the vulcanization (curing) process for industrial rubber hoses. Unlike small automotive hoses that can be cured in molds, large-bore industrial hoses or long-length hydraulic hoses are often reinforced and shaped using a specialized fabric tape. The "Wrap" machine applies this pressure, and the "Unwrap" machine removes it after the hose has hardened.

1. The "Wrap" Process (Before Curing)

Before the rubber is "cooked" (vulcanized), it is soft and "green." To ensure the layers of rubber and reinforcement (wire or textile) bond together perfectly, the hose must be tightly compressed.

  • Fabric Tape: High-strength nylon or cotton tape is wrapped spirally around the exterior of the "green" hose.

  • Pressure: The machine applies high tension to the tape. This forces out any trapped air between the rubber layers and the wire reinforcement.

  • Surface Finish: This process is what gives many industrial hoses their characteristic "cloth-impression" or "wrapped" texture on the outer cover.

2. The Vulcanization Stage

Once wrapped, the hose (often still on a steel mandrel) is placed into an Autoclave (a giant steam pressure cooker).

  • The heat causes the rubber to cross-link and harden.

  • The tight wrap ensures the hose maintains its precise diameter and that the reinforcement stays perfectly embedded in the rubber while it is in a semi-liquid state during heating.

3. The "Unwrap" Process (After Curing)

After the hose has cooled and hardened, the fabric tape is no longer needed. The Unwrap Machine performs the following:

  • Stripping: It mechanically catches the end of the tape and spins the hose (or moves the head) to peel the tape off.

  • Recycling: Most modern systems include a Tape Re-winder. This smooths out the used nylon tape and winds it onto a clean spool so it can be reused for the next batch of hoses.

5. System Components

  • The Lathe/Drive System: A long bed with chucks that rotate the hose (often up to 60 meters long).

  • The Traveling Carriage: A motorized unit that moves along the length of the hose, carrying the tape bobbins and maintaining constant tension.

  • Tension Control: Electronic or magnetic brakes that ensure the tape is applied with the exact same force from start to finish.
